Yet ask an athlete what’s in the gel they take every thirty minutes, the chews in their pocket, the drink mix in their bottle, and the recovery shake afterward — and the answer changes shape.

Why the guidance exists

It isn’t a conspiracy. Carbohydrate is the fastest substrate to oxidize, but, if your fat-burning machinery is downregulated, it’s genuinely the only thing keeping you moving. The conventional advice is internally consistent — it just assumes a metabolism that has already lost its range.
